About me

Dr. Stephen D. McLeod is an ophthalmologist who specializes in cataracts and corneal disease, as well as refractive (vision correction) surgery. He is chair of the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology.

McLeod's research focuses on diagnosing and treating corneal infections. He is also involved in developing devices to improve cataract surgery.

McLeod earned his medical degree at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed an ophthalmology residency at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary at the University of Illinois at Chicago. At the Doheny Eye Institute, he completed fellowship training in corneal and external eye disease – a category ranging from conjunctivitis to cataracts – and refractive surgery.

McLeod is editor-in-chief of Ophthalmology, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
