About me

Dr. Alan W. Shindel is a urologist who specializes in sexual function and dysfunction, testosterone biology, urinary disorders in men and chronic pelvic pain syndromes.

Shindel's research interests include medical student education, sexual wellness and new methods for assessing bladder and pelvic pain conditions.

Shindel earned his medical degree and completed a residency in urology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He completed a fellowship in andrology – men's health – at UCSF. He then earned a master of advanced study degree in clinical research at the University of California, Davis.

Shindel is editor-in-chief of Sexual Medicine, the open-access journal of the International Society for Sexual Medicine. He is the scientific program chair for the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, chair of the guidelines panel on ejaculation disorders for the American Urological Association (AUA), and senior editor for the AUA's urology core curriculum on andrology (medical care of men's conditions). He is also a coach for medical students at the UCSF School of Medicine.

A native of northern Illinois, Shindel has lived in California since 2007.
